CLOSED REGISTRATION
In 2019, Gareth White (Royal Central School of Speech and Drama) and Bruce Barton (University of Calgary) received an Arts and Humanities Research Council (UK) Network Grant to conduct a research project entitled “Playing with Intimacy and Intensity: An Interdisciplinary network for participatory performance practice” (PII Network).
The project brought together UK-based and European researchers, practitioners and practitioner-researchers with the goal of exploring new and novel approaches to creating intimate and intense experiences in live performance through play and games. It responded to the growing prevalence of participatory strategies across different performance forms, and to the practical and ethical challenges of involving spectator-participants in intimate and intense activities.
Two laboratory events, themed respectively as Intensity and Intimacy, were held in May and November, 2019, and combined practical investigations with round-table discussion and facilitated reflection. Building upon and extending the PII Network to the North American Context, “Reimagining Intimacy” features two virtual Laboratory events that will bring together vanguard immersive and participatory performance creators from across Canada, the USA, England and Northern Europe.
